♪ made dear old dad >> good afternoon, everybody. >> yeah. >> they're really good all together. >> thanks for inviting us into your home tonight. that is it for this special report, fair, balanced and unafraid. greta goes on the record right now. this is a fox news alert. news tonight that senate leaders may be closing in on a possible deal to reopen the government and avoid a default on the nation's debt. late today the white house abruptly postponed a meeting with congressional leaders to give them time to hammer out a deal. ed henry is live with the latest. >> reporter: what just happened the last few moments is that we got word that the president is not going to be coming out to announce anything, that suggests that while they're close, they still do not have a final product. that signal we got that the meeting in the afternoon was pushed back was actually a

positive sign. it's not a sign that things were falling apart. it suggested that the white house senate democratic and republican leaders were making enough -- here's what we know at this hour. that basically there's three key dates, that under this proposed deal, the debt ceiling would be increased to early mid-february, the government would be reopened until mid january and then that there would be broader budget talks with an expiration date of december 15. now why are those dates significant? number one, on the january 15th reopening of the government until mid january, what that means is, arrange january 15, more sequester cuts are about to kick in. that would tee us up for another big showdown in mid january as to whether democrats are going to pull in some of those big sequester cuts, a lot of republicans want to stop that. finally it seems like delaying

the medical device tax for two years, the thing that has come up in the president's health care law. that would not be part of this deal. that would be something they would try to work out in those broader budget talks. but this may anger senator ted cruz who will say wait a minute why are you punting into mid jarp. two years ago we had a similar process, not exactly the same, but similar, what that so-called supercommittee and in the end they punted on all of it. a lot are wondering is this deal -- >> there's much more right now on the record. >> greta, how are you? >> no one's going to come out of this unscathed. >> there are new developments today in the search for madeleine mccann.

you up close. former alaska governor sarah palin teaming up with republican senators ted cruz and mike lee and hundreds of angry veterans just before speaking to the crowd, governor palin and senators cruz and lee going on the record. governor, welcome to washington. of course senator you are here all the time. but why are you down at the memorial this morning? >> i'm here to hopefully help show the veterans that america's heart for our veterans is immeasurable and we think it's atrocious that our military is being used as political pawn for that political game and we're going to change that and we appreciate these guys who are the good guys in the senate picking up the fight for us. but there are a few things that we can do to show our support and that's why i'm here. >> this belongs to the people. we're here to show your solidarity with them that this is not a tool to be used against them in a political fight. this is theirs.

>> senator cruz? >> our veterans should be above pollics. it is shameful that the administration is barricading and trying to shut down the memorials. weeks ago the house of representatives passed funding to open every memorial in this country. and president obama and the democrats are blocking it. they're trying to play games and the american people know they're trying to play games. they need to come together and fix this problem and stop holding our veterans hostage. >> there are two types of memorials, there are the veterans memorials and the other memorials, it's the veterans memorials that's got people riled up. how did it happen on october 1 that no one realized in the house or the senate that for instance the death benefits weren't going to be paid, no one realized that? >> just like we didn't realize they were going to put doors around the world war ii memorial. you had to build doors in the first place in order to lock them and that's what they did. trying to make things as difficult as they possible can be for the american people and it's not right.

>> it's all a matter of priorities, it's a matter of really a lack of respect coming from the top when we realize that these political games are resulting in it being taken out on our veterans. so the shutdown priorities reflect that lack of respect, really they reflect a lack of valor coming from our commander in chief. >> do you think the commander in chief, the president was the one that said -- >> the command never chief, the president today, he could be here to say, yes, we will tear down these barricades, we will allow our veterans to come in to their memorials because they have paid the ultimate price. they are the ones that have allowed us this freedom. >> have you talked to the world war ii veterans, we boarded the bus. these elderly gentlemen laughed at the idea of putting a waist-high barrier to keep them

out. >> those men were saying we took on the cliffs of normandy, a barrier is not going to keep us out of this memorial. but you asked about the president's decisions, you know, his political operatives made the decisions initially. but president obama personally has issued a veto threat saying he will veto funding to reopen this memorial. >> but he signed it. >> he signed it and he said he will veto funding to fund the va, the department of veterans affairs. our veterans should be above polit politics. you can see the president's written veto threat, that's wrong. and the command never chief should be standing with our vets, not try nothiing to use t political pawns. >> trying to fund the death benefits and also to travel to see the remains at dover. quickly signed by the president. you give them credit for that? >> yes, absolutely.

and it's an example of how we can work together to fund those areas of government as to which there is broad based by partisan consensus. especially in areas where there's no connection whatsoever to obama care. there's no reason why we can't back fill government, why we can't fund it on a step by step basis. they're telling us unless you're willing to fund everything, we're unwilling to fund anything. that doesn't make sense. >> the fact that it took the american people being outraged generally for this to get front burner. >> and our vets have allowed us to be here today standing up for our first amendment rights so that we can express that outrage and that we can then positivelyism pact the change that needs to take place so something like this never happens again. >> straight ahead, veterans storming the barricades at the world war ii memorial and then later some of them taking their protests from the war memorial over to the white house. plus, more of our interview with governor sarah palin. also governor chris christie

described. i think the people would say, thank you good guys for being there fighting the good fight for the rest of us. >> you rode over here, i saw you ride over to senator mike lee and senator ted cruz, are any of them being bruised in this fight? >> they are tough, they are den tenacious, it's like the vets that are here today, we learn from them. we know that they weren't timid, they never backed down from a fight. ted cruz and others, we learn from them, we wish to emulate them in our bravery and our actions in the good fight for freedom. it isn't always bad if the good guys at the end of the day win and the good guys are those who want their country back.

our debt. that's all the republicans are asking of our president is to agree to negotiate, agree to come to the table. i'm very disappointed that thursday night he told the american people that he was going to negotiate and 24 hours later he called off the deal to negotiate. >> there seems to be some sort of deal to negotiate. to me the white house has called up. he met with leaders, he intends to meet with him he said. there's a deal being draft in the senate. what do you think of this deal? >> first of all, we're only in the senate republicans with all due respect are only relevant i would argue because we have a house majority. and the reason that the president called off the deal or called off negotiating with house leadership is clearly because he thinks he can get a better deal with the senate. so i have said over the weekend, it's time for the senate republicans to grow a backbone, to join the house republicans, and not sell out on anything short of a deal with the president to deal with long-term spending. i don't think we're going to solve the budget in ten years like the house has proposed, but

certainly the senate's proposal, whose budget never balances isn't fair to the american people. >> we understand this deal coming out of the senate is raise the debt ceiling to mid-february and fund the government until mid january. is that likely to be attractive to all the house republicans? are there enough democrats to peel off to compensate for those opposed to it for the republican party? >> i'm not a democrat whip, i'm a republican whip. so i'm not going to purport to know what my democrat colleagues are going to do. but the house is more united than the five years i have been in the congress. >> does that mean you're likely to lose a republican when it comes over from the senate. >> simply a raising of the debt limit, an opening of the government with no structural reforms in spending, i for one will not be voting for and i would venture to guess that the lion's share of republicans would vote against that measure

standoff over the shutdown and the debt cells. right now senate majority leader harry reid and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell spa spearheading a negotiation. late today, the white house postponing a meeting between president obama and congressional leaders to give senate leaders a little more time to work on an agreement. no detail yet, but we'll bring you news as soon as we get it. and an alleged al qaeda -- mediterranean, the libyan suspect is now in new york, he's accused in the 1988 bombings in kenya and tanzania. a hunter lost for 19 days in a northern california forest has been found alive. other huchbnters found the 72-year-old man and carried him to safety.

he survived by eating squirrels and lizards. chris christie blasting we spoke with governor christy at the points of light charity event in washington. the go for was honored for his -- governor tell me what it's like to wing this award? it's wonderful to be acknowledged for the work that i and everyone else did. i felt like -- >> oifgs up there and it was a horrible mess. how are you doing now? >> we're getting there, we're certainly far from finished. it's almost a year, it will be a year in a couple of weeks. a lot of businesses are back and most of the homeowners are back, but there's still a few thousands people that are still in their homes. it's going to take some time.

we lost or had severely damaged 365,000 homes so it's going to take a while to get all that back. >> with 20/20 hindsight, what could have made the recovery faster? what do you need? what do you want next time? >> that congress could have acted a lot faster. really that's the only thing so far that's been a problem. there's some federal bureaucratic sufficient that i think no matter what -- congress waited 100 days to act. it's the longest they ever waited to act after a disaster of that scope. we could have been three months further long if they acted at the same speed they acted after katrina. but instead they made new york and new jersey wait 100 days. >> this is part of the whole problem of what they're engaged in right now. they're higher to run the government not to close it. and see if they could be getting

their job done and they're not. >> has the shutdown affected new jersey? >> not yet, but it will. >> out will start to affect sandy recovery efforts. so far, so good, it hasn't. but if this is a very elongated closure, it could start to do that. >> a lot of groups came in from other places to help with sandy. whether or not the group's coming in to help from around the country, well organized and coordinated so that was a good thing? >> it was a great thing. and we had folks, we had southern baptists come up with mobile kitchens that they put all over the state and were making meals for people who didn't have them. and obviously the american red cross, the salvation army were also an enormous help and then just lots of kids came up on their winter breaks to help people. and organized by colleges. it was a really got effort.

a lot of those organizations have done this before and they know what aboexactly what they'. >> i came thereupon and we tried to hit the ground a lot to help people. they have done so many of these that it like a well oiled piece of machinery, they have got trucks, people coming from all over, they have got churches where may have already arranged to park all their trailers. >> what it also shows you is just the great heart of people all across this country who, you know, maybe had never been to our state before in our lives. many of them hadn't been. but they heard there was a problem. they saw the images over television and the newspapers. and they said we got to come and help. that's one of the things that this is all about tonight that people volunteer their time to help others and they did a great job for us in new jersey. >> why does it take so much to sort of bring out that goodness? why can't we sustain that a little bit more? >> i think we can. i think in washington they can't. but, you know, across the

country, my experience is that people sustain goodness every day and that's part of what makes our country great. sometimes those of us who are in this business, whether it's politics like me, or the media like you, we tend to focus on the things that go on in washington, d.c. or some of the state capitals. but across the country, there's so many people that give so generously of their time. we sustain it as a country, not only here but across the world. >> what's the problem here, why can't they talk to each other and get something done? >> because they don't talk to each other on a regular basis. they don't develop relationships across party lines, they don't begin to even think about these things until there's a crisis that they themselves created because of their own behavior. it's a lack of leadership of both parties. we saw this thing coming for months. everybody plays brinksmanship

those deadlines fall after the midterm elections in november of 2014. that's the next time they have to answer to you, the voter. and if any deal, any part of it expires after the midterm elections, you know what that means, they're afraid of you and they want to maybe hide something from you. they want political cover until after the midterms. if there is no long-term solution, rather than trying to hoodwink us with a temporary decision. make the temporary deal expire october 4, 2014. that is one month before the midterms. that will a allow you to stop and think about what the lawmakers are doing. there's no done deal yet, but we need to pay attention to the timelines. our lawmakers said there could be a hidden agenda behind them. if you have an important story or issue you think i should take on the record, e-mail us about it.

should resigning? >> this isn't personal, this is job performance, this is accountability. how many times have we seen this administration with the lack of responsibility and accountability. i go back to eric holder, fast and furious, i asked for him to resign. we still don't know what the bottom line is with benghazi. we still don't know on the irs investigation. i'm on the senate finance committee, we're still investigating but we still haven't got that track to go either to the treasury or the white house. this administration is awfully easy to slide and then there's no accountability and responsibility. so, hey, in kansas city, we only won two games last year with the chiefs. now we're 6 and 0. >> i was going to say, you're doing pretty well this year. you did lousy in the first super bowl though. >> well, okay. >> do you remember that? >> yes, i remember that. >> just checking. >> i remember way back when we won, but that's another story. >> i remember the packers winning the first one against kansas city. you're not in the majority.

so obviously you can't issue subpoenas, but you get answers faster on all these things, why isn't the majority party in the house just issue subpoenas and force these people to come, force these people to produce documents. why the drag on just getting information, however the cards may fall? >> i think it's specific legal authority that they do not have in the house that we have in the finance committee. in the finance committee, when they found out things, we don't just hold a hearing, we ask for more. it's all going to determine on the communications that we get t real communications so that we, if you have a v and you come up here and here's the treasurer and here's the white house, you need those communications to tie those down. i think along about november we're going to have a report that hopefully will make a difference. >> what do you think about this deal that's being floated around in the senate tonight? to wait leadership has their briefing tomorrow morning at 11:00. i tell you one thing, we have to address the long-term debt

problem. this isn't our money we're spending, we're spending our kids and grandkids money. and then with this complete breakdown with the exchanges, honest to goodness, it's two weeks, in another two months we're going to be fining people for not being in a program they can't sign up for. this is ridiculous. if we don't have a long-term debt solution, there's going to be a rocky road for this. >> that's even in the senate. we understand it's a temporary zea deal, you heard my take on deadlines, you don't like those short-term deadlines either. just kicking it to january and february, is that no to you? would you vote against that? >> i want to hear the details about what the plan is. >> is there anywhere there's a temporary deal like that would satisfy you to vote yes? >> again, i want to know the details of what's happening. the big hangup is really the sequester or the cuts. the cuts that have been made under the budget control act.

we can't give that away. we have made serious cuts in spending, and that is the problem. if you give the president and larry reid $6 billion more dollars to spend, they're going to spend it. we have got to stop that and keep the budget control act. that's the only lever we have. that's the hammer as referred to. >> senator, always nice to see you. coming up news in the search for little madeleine mccann, the little british girl missing since 2007 in port gal. police now trying to track down a new suspect. plus you're going to hear from the missing girl's parents, that's next.

someone went into that apartment and taken a little girl away from her family. >> new leads in the search for madeleine mccann. the little british girl disappeared during a family vacation in portugal, that was back in 2007. british police are saying there are significant changes in the investigation. sky news correspondent is live

in london with the latest. what is new in this investigation? >> what they've done, seven years after the disappearance of madeleine mccann, they eliminated the matn who was the prime suspect. and identified another suspect. a man scene carrying a girl toward the beach around 10:00 the evening of madeleine's disappearance. they say the girl this man was carrying very much matched madeleine's description. she was a little girl, three or four years old, had blonde hair, may have been wearing pajamas. the man police want to talk to is white, in his 30s, he has dark hair. two people spotted him walking toward the beach. please say it's vital that they identify this man. they also say that it's helpful they managed to eliminate their owe suspect. a man seen in similar

circumstances, carrying a child at 9:15 that evening. they say they're now almost certain he had nothing to do with madeleine's disappearance. they also say they want to talk to a number of men who were seen lurking as they described it, around the mccann family apartment the day of her disappearance. they're described as being men who were all fair haired, they think they may have been dutch or german, and for that reason, there are tv appeals taking place in germany and the netherlands too. they're also investigating at what they think were bogus charity collectors going door to door in the town, who may have been staking out the apartments perhaps for burglaries, they're also looking into a four fold increase in burglaries that have taken place in that town in the recent weeks and months dating up to madeleine's disappearance. including some burglaries that took place in the very apartment block where she had been staying. >> we can talk about why it took

six years for them to dismiss this man. we'll talk about that another time. back here at home, our nation's veterans storming the barricades meant to keep them out of their own memorials shut down by the government. yesterday here in washington, hundreds of americans taking part in the march, some protesters even taking the metal barricades and dropping them in front of the white house gates, we're on the ground with the veterans and their tea party supporters. >> i think a great wrong has been done against the veterans of this country. they found money to close this off. >> my dad's world war ii vet, korean vet. he didn't live long enough to see this. >> i'm out here because the government cannot use our veterans as a pawn. >> it's idiotic. >> if i was chuck hagel, a vietnam veteran and someone came up to me and said, we're not going to be able to pay these
